Tell Your Students About the New Drop-in Hours

Hello instructors,

We are excited to share with you all that the UIC Writing Center will begin hosting Drop-In Tutoring this Spring 2023 semester beginning Wednesday, January 18, 2023. Drop-in tutoring will be every Wednesday through Friday from 11:30am-1:30pm in Grant Hall 106. Drop-In tutoring will be led by Jenny Hernandez, a Writing Center supervisor, as well as any available supervisors and/or peer tutors.

Drop-in tutoring was created to help meet tutoring needs when there is no longer availability for one-on-one sessions. However, there are key differences between drop-in tutoring and the regular one-on-one sessions you may already be familiar with.

Drop-in tutoring is an open time and space for any writer who needs guidance. Tutors leading drop in sessions may be tutoring multiple students
at once.

Students are welcome to work with the drop-in tutoring for about 15 minutes. If they need more time, they are encouraged to use the space to study without working with a tutor.

There will be no client report form for drop-in tutoring. This is because we will be working with many students for variable times. Instead, we will be sending Drop-In Report Forms (DRF). DRFs will simply be a thanks to all students who came to drop-in tutoring on a given day.

We realize that many instructors offer Writing Center sessions as a form of extra credit. It is up to instructor discretion whether a drop-in session or DRF will count toward extra credit. Just know that a DRF does not mean that a student has worked with a tutor, only that they’ve attended drop in tutoring.

We encourage you to share this news with your students.

All Best,

The Writing Center
