Become a Tutor

Tutor and writer enjoying their work together.

If you did well in English 161 (or in your research writing course before you transferred to UIC) and are interested in learning more about writing and, more importantly, about how to interact productively with the great range of students that make up our impressively diverse body of people at UIC, please become a tutor!! :)

Tutors begin by taking English 282 (senior and graduate students can also take 482). Students meet in class and learn to expand the range and depth of tutoring approaches that are welcoming, helpful, and meaningful to fellow students.

Students who complete 282 (or 482) can apply for a paid staff position. Although the hiring process can be competitive, students who do well in the course and are committed to reflecting on learning something new from each tutoring encounter can expect to do well.

English 282 and 482 prepare students to tutor writing from all academic disciplines and levels. The courses are reading- and writing intensive, drawing on established theory and evidence-based practice. 282 focuses more on tutoring practice, and 482 adds an element of research and preparation for leadership roles in learning environments.

Students tutor two hours a week starting the fifth week of the semester and continue to meet in class in small sections capped at 12 throughout the semester, analyzing their sessions, critically engaging theories of tutoring, conducting research, and developing approaches to tutoring that foster participation and an inclusive community among students. With its emphasis on integrating learning with practice, the course is ideal for students of all majors who would like to develop professional skills, especially critical thinking, communication in diverse environments, and leadership.
